A coast of coves and fishing villages
Known as the "wild coast", the Costa Brava owes its name to its rugged shoreline of hidden coves, cliffs and pine trees reaching down to the water. It stretches from Blanes to the French border.
Highlights include Tossa de Mar and its walled old town (Vila Vella), Lloret de Mar and the Santa Clotilde gardens, the Marimurtra botanical garden in Blanes and, further north, villages such as Calella de Palafrugell and Cadaqués.
Getting there from Calella
The R1 train takes you to Blanes, the gateway to the Costa Brava, in about 20 minutes. From there buses run to Lloret and Tossa, and in summer boats sail along the coast.
By car, Lloret is about 25 minutes away and Tossa de Mar about 40. Leave early in July and August: parking near the coves fills up fast.
